Fever Dream

Fever Dream is a musical exploration of a thing we are all too familiar with in 2021: distance. This piece was written for an outdoor concert in Denver, CO by Nebula Ensemble, involving socially distanced performers. To this point, I wrote parts for each instrument that are performed independently of one another, without regard to a consistent feeling of pulse among the ensemble. Similar to our entire society’s experience during much of 2020, each of the ensemble members in this piece are in a way “doing their own thing,” while also engaging in the same collective experience overall. The text for this piece came from first-hand accounts of the height of quarantine, provided by several of my friends and family members.

Performed by Emily Gradowski (soprano), Sarah Perske (mezzo-soprano), Catherine Flinchum (flute), Josh Goo (B-flat clarinet), Arlo Adams (violin), Joe Engel (cello), and Russ Callison (guitar)
